Big 12 Football- Week 7 Predictions

Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-2) @ TCU Horned Frogs (3-2)

Both TCU and Texas Tech are coming off of bye weeks.  Two weeks ago, the Frogs beat Iowa St. in a close game on a game-winning field goal.  The Cyclones are known to upset good Big 12 teams, even if they are not a good team, so coming away with a win was great for TCU.  It wasn’t all perfect for TCU, as starting QB Shawn Robinson went out with an apparent shoulder injury.  He is expected to start on Thursday, but he has to be really ready if he wants to carry the Frogs over Texas Tech.  Texas Tech’s QB Alan Bowman also suffered an injury two weeks ago before the bye.  During the game he was sandwich sacked between two defenders, which resulted in a collapsed lung.  He was admitted into the hospital but is expected to start for Tech on Thursday.  If Alan plays, TCU’s defense will need to win the game, like they did versus Iowa St.  Fort Worth is a tough place to play, especially conference games.  TCU will beat Texas Tech in a defensive game.

Prediction- TCU Horned Frogs- 27 Texas Tech- 20

Oklahoma State Cowboys @ Kansas State Wildcats

Oklahoma St. is following a really bad loss against Iowa St.  The Cowboys defense gave up 48 points to  a struggling Iowa State offense.  The offense was able to put up 42 points, but in the Big 12, sometimes that is not enough.  Taylor Cornelius lead the offense with 4 passing TDs and 1 rushing TD.  Justice Hill had an OK day rushing for 66 yards and a touchdown, averaging only 2.8 yards per carry.  Kansas State has had a rough start to the year going 0-3 in Big 12 play.  They need some help.  Kansas State is playing at home in Manhattan, but their home crowd wont be enough.  Oklahoma State beats the Wildcats this weekend.

Prediction- Oklahoma State- 38 Kansas State- 21

Baylor Bears @ #9 Texas Longhorns

Baylor’s start to the season has gone very well.  They look much better than the team that won 1 game last season.  The Bears win last week against Kansas State was a big win.  It proved that Baylor was no longer a bottom of the Big 12 team, but towards the top.  Teams like Texas, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and maybe TCU are better than Baylor, but after that, the Bears are right there towards the top.  TEXAS IS BACK.  The Longhorns have finally found a great quarterback, a good coach, and have kept up their great defense.  The AP Poll has Texas in the top 10 for the first time since 2010.  Texas dominated Oklahoma last weekend.  Despite the close score and the game-winning field goal, Texas was up on the Sooners by 21 with 8 minutes left.  Kyler Murray showed his brilliance and stormed back basically by himself, but the Longhorns should have won that game by more than 3 points.  The Bears are not ready to beat Texas yet, and playing them in Austin is tough, so Texas will win.

Prediction- Texas- 30 Baylor- 21

#6 West Virginia Mountaineers @ Iowa State Cyclones

West Virginia has the 6th best team in the country. Will Grier is arguably the best player in the country, as he is a favorite for the Heisman trophy, but he had his worst game last weekend against a bad Kansas team, throwing for 332 yards and 4 TDs, and 3 interceptions.  He got the win but until the end of the game, it was competitive.  They will have to play better to beat a solid Cyclone team.  Iowa State got their yearly upset win against Oklahoma State last week.  Last year, the Cyclones beat TCU and Oklahoma who were both ranked pretty high at the time. Although it would be cool, I dont see West Virginia losing to Iowa State.  I do think it will be closer than many think, but the Mountaineers will win it.

Prediction- West Virginia- 35 Iowa State- 31
